The Microsoft Surface team is looking for an experienced Industrial Designer to join our multi-disciplinary User Experience team to help drive creative design solutions for this groundbreaking product. You will put your expertise and passion to full use as you help define and realize a vision for a new groundbreaking platform.

The right candidate will be creative and pragmatic with high standards for quality and high levels of technical expertise. She or he must be a strong conceptual designer who can design in an environment that is ripe with ambiguity and possibility but in which where there are few precedents. The ideal candidate will have a strong grasp of materials and the latest manufacturing techniques.

Quick and practical reaction to demands, flexibility and understanding, as well as effective and frequent communications will define your success. You will join a strong design team that includes talented writers, designers, and user researchers; and you'll also work closely with some of the smartest and most experienced engineers at Microsoft. You will have the rich resources available to create high-quality imaginative and compelling deliverables. You will work from extensive concept exploration and research results from real users, to high fidelity models and detailed feature specifications at the cutting edge of technology.

Primary responsibilities include:
Stewardship of industrial design features, details, and process from concept to engineering and production support.
Cross-discipline information gathering, collaboration, and transparency
Work with external business partners, evangelizing good ID Practice and evaluating partner ID work.
Present design concepts to multidisciplinary internal and external audiences
Work closely with engineers, physicists, and user research
Manage projects to a schedule with cost constraints and business demands
Hands-on concept design and model construction; create clear specifications
Work with ID consultancies and other vendors
Function on both tactical and strategic goals
Establish standards for surface computing

Qualifications:
You live design.
BA /BS/BFA in Industrial Design required-Masters a plus.
Minimum 10 yrs design experience
Exhibits strong leadership capacity
Expertise in the latest in materials and manufacturing techniques.
Proven ability to work within dynamic and aggressive product development timelines
Solid understanding and experience of production techniques and product development milestones
Establish and manage an end-to-end process to consistently deliver outstanding results across a portfolio of products
Demonstrated ability to work effectively with other User Experience disciplines (Interaction Design, User Research, and User Assistance), Technical disciplines (PM, Engineering, Test), as well as Business and Marketing from the early stages of planning through implementation and release
Able to assess design opportunities from Research results and take action to convert into impact
Proficiency with the pencil and the usual suspects for design applications-some CAD surface modeling program, preferably some experience with SolidWorks.
Familiarity with consumer electronics and furniture design-tech savvy too
Proven record of art and design on consumer products, preferably in products that rely heavily on software interface possibly in the games, phone, PDA, or similar products space
Must have exceptional problem solving skills, creativity, and communication skills
Understanding of illustration, storyboarding, and User Interface Design
Organized, dependable, knowledgeable, detail oriented, communicative, and fun to work with
